6 Tips for Managing Workplace Relationships August 21, 2008
Posted by experdhr in : HR Tips , add a commentBe fair.
It is critical that you treat all employees exactly the same when dealing with issues of workplace relationships. Even marital status should make no difference in the way your address a problem. Consistency is key to guaranteeing fair and equal treatment of a diverse workforce.
Be professional.
When you must speak to employees about their behavior, confine your comments to a completely business-related context. Address issues of productivity, performance, and proper workplace conduct. Leave anything personal out of it.
Be discreet.
Don’t encourage employees to confide personal information. And remember to keep any confidential information that is entrusted to you strictly to yourself.
Be careful.
Don’t attempt to implement a policy of your own where none exists. There may well be federal, state, or local laws that apply to these situations, and your company must stay in compliance. Consult with company counsel before acting on a difficult or sensitive situation.
Be proactive.
Discuss the need for a written policy with upper management and show them how this can prevent both workplace disruption and costly lawsuits. And suggest training for supervisors on the subject.

Distance Learning
Today, more and more people are turning to distance education to develop their careers and enhance their growth opportunities. This helps people who are already employed, but need to improve their positions. They can work by day and study by night. Very often it is not possible to attend college during the day. Distance education helps you overcome this roadblock.
It also helps in situations where there is no evening college available or the distance involved is too much to travel after work. You can comfortably carry on with the program of your choice through a distance-learning program. Distance education may be spread out over a period of one or two years.
In certain distance-education programs, students work on assignments and send them in for grading. Once the assignments are graded, they come back to the student. However, some distance-education programs do not have writing assignments; instead, students are sent the study material.
Distance learning is a total self-study program after which the student appears for an examination conducted by the instructor. In correspondence education, it is common for assignments to be sent for grading at the end of a certain period.
Online Study
You may prefer to enroll online and keep in regular touch with the instructor. In an online system, you work out your assignments and the instructor goes through them and gives you the necessary feedback. You will be able to keep in touch via mail, fax and chat facility.
Online study offers many learning programs and one can spend much time exploring subjects of interest. Programs are numerous to help develop your career in the field you already are in or one you would like to enter. The choice is yours.
Evening or Morning Classes
Many colleges are conducting evening and morning classes, thus enabling working people to attend the classes at a time convenient to the student. While some prefer taking classes during morning hours, others prefer evening hours. Classes are normally conducted for two to three hours daily, or on alternate days.
Some classes are also conducted over the weekend, morning to evening. There are some courses that last for about one month, some three months, while some are for six months; these may be certificate studies.
Courses that last a year or two are generally intended to lead to a degree.
Technical Skills
Some non-traditional classroom arrangements teach simple skills, like typing and how to operate business machines. However, instruction in many specialized fields such as carpentry is also available.
You can enroll and attend classes also to work on carpentry projects to improve existent skills. The same is true of electrical and welding skills.
In the 21st century, no one should be left behind when it comes to developing a successful career. It all depends on your motivation and desire.
